Crochet this Cupid or angel granny square for all your Christmas or Valentine’s Day blankets, pillows, or any project using granny squares!
The first time I shared this pattern was for the Christmas granny squares CAL. For the Christmas blanket, this granny square was definitely intended to be an angel.
However, for my Valentine’s Day granny squares, I thought that the angel could easily turn into a Cupid granny square. So, here it is! I hope you’ll enjoy this pattern.

MATERIALS
- 4.0 mm (G/6 US, 8 UK) Crochet Hook
- 3.5 mm (E/4 US, 9 UK) Crochet Hook
- DK (3, Light) Yarn
- Tapestry Needle
YARN
For the cupid/angel granny square in the first picture on this page, I used Durable Comfy (291 yds / 266 m per 100 g) in the following colors:
- Black – Black (325)
- Light Blue – Pastel Blue (281)
- Pale Pink – Pale Pink (2192)
- White – Ivory (326)
- Yellow – Sunflower (2178)
Feel free to use any yarn with the appropriate hook.
SIZE
5.1″ (13 cm)
GAUGE
With your 4.0 mm crochet hook, make a MC.
Round 1. Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), hdc 11 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (11 sts)
Round 2. Ch 1, hdc inc 11, sl st to join. (22 sts)
Round 3. Ch 1, (hdc inc 1, hdc 1) 11 times, sl st to join. (33 sts)
The three rounds should measure 2″ (5 cm).

Cupid or Angel Granny Square – Free Crochet Pattern
GrannySquare
With your 4.0 mm hook, crochet a simple circle square with the following colors:
Rounds 1-4. Use pale pink yarn.
Round 5-8. Use white yarn.

Halo Applique
With your 3.5-mm hook and light blue, ch 20. Sl st in the first ch to form a ring without twisting your ch.
Round 1. Ch 1, [sc 3], sc 1, sl st 7, sc 1, [sc 3], sc 1, sl st 7, sc 1, sl st in first st to join. (24 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Hair Applique
With your 3.5-mm hook and yellow, ch 14.
Row 1. Sc inc 1 in the second ch from hook. Sc inc 1, sc 1, [sc 3] in next st, sc 3, sc dec 3. Sl st in the last ch of initial ch.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Left Wing
With your 3.5-mm hook and light blue, ch 10.
Round 1. Sl st 1 in the second ch from hook. Sl st 1, sc dec 1, hdc 1, dc dec 1, dc 1, [dc 8] in the last ch. Working on the other side of initial ch, dc 1, hdc 1, sc 4, sl st 2, ch 1, sl st in first st to join.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Right Wing
With your 3.5-mm hook and light blue, ch 10.
Round 1. Sl st 1 in the second ch from hook. Sl st 1, sc 4, hdc 1, dc 1, [dc 8] in last ch. Working on the other side of initial ch, dc 1, dc dec 1, hdc 1, sc dec 1, sl st 2, ch 1, sl st in first st to join.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Eyes and Cheeks
(Make 2 with pink and 2 with white)
With your 3.5-mm hook, make a MC.
Round 1. Sc 6 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (6 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Finishing
Sew the wings below rounds 1-4 of the granny square.
Sew the eyes and the cheeks, and with a length of black, embroider the pupils and the mouth.
Bend the hair applique where you made 3 sts in the same ch, and sew it on the forehead of Cupid.
Sew the halo applique.
Weave in all your ends.
