Ready for some crochet vitamins? Crochet this lemon granny square!
After one year from the Tutti Frutti Granny Squares CAL, it’s finally time to add one more pattern to the collection.
I actually already crocheted this lemon granny square before the CAL last year but I was not sure I loved it. So, I threw it in the pile of “maybe” projects and only shared the round, sliced Citrus Fruit Granny Square.
However, ever since the Tutti Frutti Granny Squares CAL, I got many requests for a pattern to turn my lemon applique into a granny square. So, I finally picked up this lemon granny square from my pile of neglected projects and wrote up the pattern!
Just like all the other patterns of the Tutti Frutti collection, this lemon granny square is the size of a classic granny square with 4 rounds. But of course, you can make your squares bigger by adding more rounds!

- Aran (4, Medium) Yarn
- Tapestry Needle

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in the following colors:
- A – Buttercup Yellow (623)
- B – Vanilla Cream (608)
- C – Coffee Bean (611)
- D – Lime Green (629)
Feel free to use any yarn with the appropriate hook.

Lemon GRANNY SQUARE – FREE CROCHET PATTERN
Lemon
With A, crochet one large lemon applique leaving out the leaf and the stem.

Squaring
RS facing, join B in BLO of the first hdc in the middle top of the lemon (photo 1).
Round 5. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-2 sp), [BLO dc 1, BLO hdc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO dc 2, BLO tr 1] in next st, ch 2, [BLO tr 1, BLO dc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO dc 1, BLO hdc 1] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 2, BLO dc 1] in next st, ch 2, [BLO dc 1, BLO hdc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO dc 2, BLO tr 1] in next st, ch 2, [BLO tr 1, BLO dc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 2] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 2] in same st as joining, sl st in third-made ch to join. (8 sts and 2 ch-1 sps on each side, 1 ch-2 sp at each corner, photo 2)
Round 6. Sl st in first corner sp, ch 4 (counts as a dc and a corner sp), [dc 3] in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3] in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk 2, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 3 times. Ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 2, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 3, [dc 2] in initial corner sp, join with a sl st in third-made ch.
Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Stem
RS facing, join C in FLO of the first hdc in the middle top of the lemon (indicated by the black arrow in photo 2).
Row 1. Ch 4, sl st 1 in the second ch from hook, sl st 2, sl st 1 back into joining st. (4 sl sts)
Fasten off and pull the tail through the last sl st. Then, using a tapestry needle, bring the tail to the back of the work and weave in your ends.
Leaf
RS facing, join D in FLO of next hdc of the lemon compared to where you made the stem (indicated by the pink arrow in photo 2).
Row 1. Ch 4, sc 1 in the second ch from hook, hdc 1, sl st 1. Sl st 1 back into joining point. (4 sts)
Fasten off and pull the tail through the last sl st. Then, using a tapestry needle, bring the tail to the back of the work and weave in your ends.
