Flowers are quick and fun projects to crochet for everyone, from beginners to more experienced crocheters.

Crocheting flowers also allows you to try new crochet stitches and techniques without the overwhelm of a too-large project.

Materials for Crocheting Flowers

  • Yarn – For most flowers, you can use DK (3, Light) or Worsted (4, Medium) weight yarn. However, you can use any yarn weight. More on this below…
  • Crochet Hook – Choose a hook of the appropriate size for your yarn. If you’re not sure which hook size to pick, check the recommendations on the yarn label;
  • Tapestry Needle – When you’re done crocheting your flower, you’ll need a yarn needle to weave in your ends and attach the flower.

Best yarn to crochet flowers

You can crochet flowers using any yarn weight and any fiber.

Most flower patterns use DK (3, Light) or Aran/worsted (4, Medium) weight yarn, but you can use thinner yarn, such as sport (2, Fine) or fingering weight yarn, to make smaller flowers or thicker yarn, such as chunky and super chunky yarn, for bigger flowers.

As for the yarn type, i.e. the fiber composition of your yarn, you can use anything including cotton, wool, or acrylic, depending on what you’ll make with your crocheted flowers.

If you’re attaching the flower to a crochet hat, blanket, or any other creations, a good rule of thumb is to crochet flowers with a comparable yarn to the one used for your project.

What to Make with Your crocheted flowers?

Crocheting flowers is so much fun! But once you have all your crocheted flowers, what are you supposed to make with them?

Over the years, I’ve accumulated a ton of crocheted flower appliques, so I’ve been coming up with different ways to use them.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Greeting Cards, especially for Mother’s Day gifts;
  • Random Acts of Crochet Kindness;
  • Fridge Magnets. Just glue your flower to a little magnet and use it to decorate the fridge or your workstation;
  • Decorate baby beanies and accessories;
  • Floral Garlands. Simply string a few flowers together and hang them around to bring Spring into your home decor;
  • Wall art;
  • Make a flower bouquet! Use some wire to make the stems of your flowers and add a few leaves to add a little bit of green.

And I’m looking forward to seeing which flowers you’ll make and how you’ll use them creatively!
