If you live in Canada, the UK, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand, you’re probably familiar with the tradition of wearing real or artificial poppies for Remembrance Day, which falls on November 11th.

The tradition of wearing poppies to commemorate fallen soldiers dates back to the end of World War I.

However, the symbolism of poppies as flowers of sleep, peace, and death was already common since ancient Greek and Roman times.

Leaving all the symbolism to the side, I just love poppy flowers for their beautiful and varied colors, even though my favorites are definitely the red ones!

This is why I decided to crochet a few poppy flowers to add a little touch of red around the house. I’ll probably use them as appliques for a pillow or wall hanging… I’m still trying to decide.

In the meantime, here is my free pattern for a crochet poppy flower!
