Crochet Lollipop Granny Square

Crochet a sweet lollipop granny square for your most fun granny square blankets, pillowcases, sweaters, and any other creation using grannies!

I first shared the crochet pattern of the lollipop granny square during the Halloween granny squares crochet along (CAL), where I used this design to make a candy corn granny square.

Then, for the Christmas granny squares, I adapted the same pattern to make a peppermint candy and a peppermint lollipop granny square.

MATERIALS

  • 4.0 mm (G/6 US, 8 UK) Crochet Hook
  • 3.5 mm (E/4 US, 9 UK) Crochet Hook
  • DK (3, Light) Yarn
  • Tapestry Needle

YARN

For the lollipop granny square I made for my Valentine’s Day granny squares, I used Durable Comfy (291 yds / 266 m per 100 g) in the following colors:

  • Light Blue – Pastel Blue (281)
  • Pink – Light Pink (203)
  • Red – Deep Red (317)
  • White – Ivory (326)

Feel free to use any yarn with the appropriate hook.

SIZE

5.1″ (13 cm)

GAUGE

With your 4.0 mm crochet hook, make a MC.

Round 1. Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), hdc 11 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (11 sts)

Round 2. Ch 1, hdc inc 11, sl st to join. (22 sts)

Round 3. Ch 1, (hdc inc 1, hdc 1) 11 times, sl st to join. (33 sts)

The three rounds should measure 2″ (5 cm).

How to Crochet a Lollipop Granny Square

Square

With your 4.0-mm hook and pink, make a MC.

*Work rounds 1-3 in the round, so do not join with a sl st! All other rounds are closed with a sl st at the end!

Round 1*. [Pink] Ch 2, hdc 11 in the MC. (11 sts)

Round 2*. [Pink] Ch 1, hdc inc 11. (22 sts)

Round 3*. [Pink] Ch 1, (hdc inc 1, hdc 1) 11 times. (33 sts)

Round 4. [Pink] Ch 1, hdc 1, hdc inc 1, (hdc 2, hdc inc 1) 10 times, 1 hdc. Close last st with white. Sl st in the first hdc to join. (44 sts)

Round 5. [White] Ch 1, sc 2, hdc 2, dc 1, dc inc 1, ch 2, dc inc 1. (Dc 1, hdc 2, sc 3, hdc 2, dc 1, dc inc 1, ch 2, dc inc 1) 3 times. Dc 1, hdc 2, sc 1, sl st in first st to join. (13 sts on each side and ch-2 at the corners)

Round 6. [White] Ch 2, dc 7. (In ch-2 corner, [dc 1, ch 2, dc 1]. On the next side, dc 13) 3 times. [dc 1, ch 2, dc 1] in the last corner, dc 6, sl st in first st to join. (15 sts on each side and ch-2 at the corners)

Round 7. [White] Ch 2, dc 8. (In ch-2 corner, [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2]. On the next side, dc 15) 3 times. [Dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in the last corner, dc 7, sl st in first st to join. (19 sts on each side and ch-1 at the corners)

Round 8. [White] Ch 1, sc 10. (In ch-1 corner, [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1]. On the next side, sc 19) 3 times. [Sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] in the last corner, sc 9, sl st in first st to join. (21 sts on each side and ch-1 at the corners).

Fasten off.

Spiral

With your 4.0-mm hook and red, surface crochet embroider between the spaces of rounds 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 of the granny square (photos 1-3).

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Lollipop Stick

With your 3.5-mm hook and light blue, ch 7.

Row 1. Sc in each ch starting from the second ch from hook. (6 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Little Bow Applique

With your 3.5-mm hook and yellow, ch 30.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew the stick just below round 4 of your granny square.

Assemble a little bow (photos 4-5), and attach it just below round 4 of the granny square.
