Being a huge potholder lover, I think I’ll keep one of these for myself. However, I think that they could also make a cute handmade gift idea for friends and family. So, I guess that this Christmas, I’ll give a couple of these hot pads to my mum and aunts too!

Behind the pattern

Already for a while, I’ve been playing with the floral lace motif I used for this potholder.

One of the first things I crocheted with this square was the Elegant Petals Shawl I designed for the issue #87 of Happily Hooked Magazine.

A small version of the elegant petal square also appeared in the Rounds of Flowers coasters, which I highly recommend if you’d like to crochet some matching coasters for your potholder. Plus, it’s interesting to see how this pattern looks when done in multiple colors!

All this to say that from shawls to potholders and coasters, this floral lace motif fits many different projects. So, feel free to use it and share with me a picture of your creations!

Before jumping into the pattern, I’ll just leave you with one more project idea using the Elegant Petals Square. Take a look at this beautiful lace top project by Magic Mommy’s Yarning HERE on Ravelry!

Potholder Assembly

Place the two squares on top of each other with both right sides facing out.

For the easiness of reading, I will refer to the Elegant Petals square as square 1, and to the solid granny square as square 2.

Pick up your work from the same corner where you ended the last round of the solid granny square, and sc all around by going through corresponding sts on both squares, as described below.

Facing square 1, insert your hook into the third ch-2 sp of one of the corners of square 1 with a movement from the right side to the wrong one.

Then, insert your hook into the first st on the next side of square 2. Yo, pull up a loop and complete your sc.

  • Make one more sc by inserting your hook into the same ch-2 sp on square 1 and the next st on square 2.
  • Sc 1 going through next tr on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 2 going through next ch-2 sp on square 1 and next 2 sts on square 2.
  • Sc 1 joining next tr on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 2 going through next ch-2 sp on square 1 and next 2 sts on square 2.
  • Sc 1 between next dc on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 2 between next ch-2 sp on square 1 and next 2 sts on square 2.
  • Sc 1 between next hdc on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 2 going through next ch-2 sp on square 1 and next 2 sts on square 2.
  • Sc 1 between next sc on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 1 going through next ch-2 sp on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Sc 1 between next sc on square 1 and next st on square 2.
  • Continue joining by making 2 sc in each ch-2 sp and 1 sc in each st on square 1 until you reach the middle tr of the next corner of square 1.
  • At the corner, [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] joining the middle tr of square 1 and the ch-2 corner sp of square 2.

Repeat the same pattern on all sides of the potholder.

Once you get back to the last corner, join the round with a sl st into first st.

Hanging Loop

Ch 15, sk 1, sl st into next st.
Ch 1, turn. Sc 20 inside the loop you just created.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.
