This tapestry crochet Moose Potholder is my latest, free hot pad pattern.
This potholder is perfect to decorate your kitchen for Fall and Winter, and I’m sure it makes some great gifts for the Holiday season.
The overall design is the same as the Bear Potholder, which is the white silhouette of an animal, in this case, a moose or elk, over a gingham background.
Initially, the idea was to use warmer colors for the gingham background. I was thinking of reds and black, more like buffalo plaid kind of fabrics.
However, this combination of greens was the best I could pull together from my yarn stash, so here they are, my moose and bear gingham potholders!
For this Moose Potholder, I used tapestry crochet using 3 strands of yarn. So, the fabric of the potholders is very solid and can already be used as a single-layer hot pad or trivet.
But if you want to make your potholder double thick, you can add a double layer of crochet or fabric to the back!

- 2.75-mm (C/2 USA, 12 UK) Crochet Hook
- Sport (2, Fine) Cotton Yarn
- Tapestry Needle
Yarn & Yardage
I used Schachenmayr Catania (137 yds, 125 m per 50 g) in the following colors and amounts:
- A – Moos (412) – 38.3 yds (35 m)
- B – Greenery (00418) – 16.4 yds (15 m)
- C – Agave (00244) – 22 yds (20 m)
- D – Creme (00130) – 35 yds (32 m)
Feel free to use any comparable yarn that meets gauge.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
Ch – Chain
RS – Right Side
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sl St – Slip Stitch
St – Stitch
WS – Wrong Side
Yo – Yarn Over
SIZE
6” (15 cm) by 6.25” (15.9 cm).
GAUGE
31 sc for 27 rows in 4” (10 cm) worked in tapestry crochet using 3 strands of yarn.
PATTERN NOTES
- The pattern is written in two sections. The Potholder is worked in rows, then the Border is worked in rounds.
- The potholder is worked entirely in sc using the tapestry crochet technique.
- Use 3 strands of yarn throughout. The pattern indicates which colors to carry.
- If the pattern says “(A) 5”, you need to single crochet in the next 5 stitches using color A.
- All uneven-numbered rows are crocheted on the RS. All even-numbered rows are crocheted on the WS.
- To reduce the number of ends to weave in, do not cut yarn B and C at the switch between sections. Instead, carry the non-used yarn inside the first st of each uneven-numbered row and inside the last st on each even-numbered row.
- Ch 1 and turn at the beginning of each new row.
- (…) – Repeat the instructions within brackets for the indicated number of times.
- With the exception of the border, the stitch count is always 45 sts.
- The color chart of the potholder is in the PDF pattern.

Cut yarns B and D.
Border
With A, ch 1 and turn.
Round 1 [RS]. Sc 45 on the top and bottom sides of the potholder, and sc 40 on the left and right sides. At the corners, ch 1. Join the round with a sl st in first st. (170 sc, 1 ch at each corner).
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Hanging Loop
WS facing, join C in the top, left or right ch-1 sp at the corner.
Ch 15, sl st in same ch-1 sp.
Ch 1, turn. Sc 20 working inside the loop you just created (and not in each ch!), sl st back in same ch-1 sp.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
