Crochet this cute love birds applique to decorate your granny squares, baby blankets, Valentine’s Day cards, T-shirts, etc.
These bird embellishments are part of my Valentine’s Day Granny Squares collection, which uses the simple circle granny square as a base for all the blocks.
Since both birds had to fit on a granny square, one bird is made as if you’re looking at it from the side, so you see it from tail to head with one wing on the side. The second bird is just in front of you, and it looks puffy and round with one wing on each side.
Depending on your project, you can choose whether to crochet both birds or just one. Also for the colors, there’s no limit! Have fun picking the most colorful yarn in your stash and crochet a few of these love birds appliques!

MATERIALS
- 3.5 mm (E/4 US, 9 UK) Crochet Hook
- DK (3, Light) Yarn
- Tapestry Needle
YARN
I used Durable Comfy (291 yds / 266 m per 100 g) in the following colors:
- Black – Black (325)
- Blue – Ocean (295)
- Light Blue – Pastel Blue (281)
- Lilac – Pastel Lilac (268)
- Orange – Orange (2194)
- Pale Pink – Pale Pink (2192)
- Pink – Light Pink (203)
- White – Ivory (326)
Feel free to use any yarn with the appropriate hook.
SIZE
- Bird 1 – 2.3″ (5.8 cm) by 1.8″ (4.5 cm)
- Bird 2 – 1.6″ (4 cm) without the wings
GAUGE
This pattern is too small to accurately determine the gauge.

Love Birds Applique – Free Crochet Pattern
The colors indicated in the pattern below refer to the love birds applique crocheted with white yarn over the red granny square background.
First Bird
With white, make a MC.
Round 1. Hdc 11 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (11 sts)
Round 2. Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), hdc inc 11, sl st in first st to join. (22 sts)
Round 3. Ch 1, (sc 4, sc inc 1) twice, hdc 1, dc 1. Ch 5 (photo 1), sl st 1 in second ch from hook, sc 2, hdc inc 1. Dc 1 on the upper half of the next dc (see black arrow in photo 2), dc inc 1 on the lower half of the same dc (see pink arrow in photo 2).
Dc 1 in the same hdc as the last dc (see arrow in photo 3), dc 1, hdc 2, hdc inc 1, hdc 1, [hdc 1, sc 1] in the next st, sc 4. Sl st in first st to join. (35 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing (photo 4).
Wing
With lilac, ch 4.
Row 1. Sl st 1 in the second ch from hook, sc inc 1, [hdc 5] in the last ch. Working on the other side of initial ch, sl st 1. Leave remaining sts unworked. (9 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembly
Sew the wing on the body of the bird.
Second Bird
With white, make a MC.
Round 1. Dc 12 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (12 sts)
Round 2. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc inc 12, sl st in first st to join. (24 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Wing 1
Join lilac in the first st of round 2.
Row 1. Ch 1, [hdc 1, dc 1, ch 1, sc 1] in first st of round 1, [sc 1, ch 1, dc 1, hdc 1, ch 1, sl st 1] in the next st. (6 sts, 4 chs)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Wing 2
Sk 8 sts on round 2, and join lilac in next st.
Repeat the same pattern as for wing 1.
Hearts
Crochet a small heart and a medium heart as described HERE.
Finishing
Sew the two birds on your project. Then, with a length of lilac, embroider the tail of bird 1.
With a length of black, embroider the eyes of the birds, and with a length of orange, make the beaks and the legs.
Attach the hearts.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
