Learn how to crochet half solid hexagons with no gaps, both with a flat side and a pointy side.
When you crochet blankets and other projects using hexagons, you often find yourself wondering how to fill the gaps at the edges to make a straight border.
The easiest solution is to crochet half hexagons!
There are two kinds of half hexagons that you’ll need to fill the gaps on all sides of your project:
- A half hexagon with a flat side;
- and a half hexagon with a pointy side.
A while ago, I already shared the free pattern of the classic half hexagons, which are great when you’re using classic solid hexagons.
These hexagons are solid but not completely. They still have gaps at each corner, as you can see in the pic below.
To eliminate the gaps at the corners, I came up with a completely solid hexagon without gaps.
And if there is a completely solid hexagon, there must be completely half hexagons as well!
So, let’s take a look at how to crochet half solid hexagons without gaps.
But first, here are a few patterns that use half hexagons…

HOW TO CROCHET a Half SOLID HEXAGON – NO GAPS! – Flat Side
Row 1
Make a MC, ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), dc 7 in MC. (7 sts)
Row 2
Ch 2 and turn. Dc inc 2, ([dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc inc 1) twice, dc inc 1 in last st. (14 dc, 2 tr)
row 3
Ch 2 and turn, dc inc 1 in first st, (dc 4, [dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next tr) twice, dc 4, dc inc 1 in last st. (20 dc, 2 tr)
row 4
Ch 2 and turn, dc inc 1 in first st, (dc 6, [dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next tr) twice, dc 6, dc inc 1 in last st. (26 dc, 2 tr)
To keep growing your half hexagon with a flat side, follow these simple rules:
- Dc inc 1 in first and last sts;
- Dc in each remaining dc of the previous row;
- [Dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in each tr.
HOW TO CROCHET a Half SOLID HEXAGON – NO GAPS! – Pointy Side
Row 1
Make a MC, ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), dc 7 in MC. (7 sts)
Row 2
Ch 2 and turn. Dc 1 in first st, ([dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc inc 1) twice, [dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc 1 in last st. (12 dc, 3 tr)
row 3
Ch 2 and turn. Dc 2, ([dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc 4) twice, [dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc 2. (18 dc, 3 tr)
row 4
Ch 2 and turn. Dc 3, ([dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc 6) twice, [dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc 3. (24 dc, 3 tr)
To keep growing your half hexagon with a pointy side, follow these rules:
- Dc in each dc of the previous row;

Hi are these USA terms or UK terms thanks x
Hi, these are USA terms 🙂
The pictures look like the flat side half hexagon isn’t straight at the bottom. I’m doing a honeycomb style blanket using your solid hexagon and want the edges to be flat all the way around. Did you have to block it to get it straight or does it even go completely flat on the bottom?
Hi, the half hexagons in the pics were not blocked so maybe they don’t look super straight but they are straight. I used them to make a blanket, and all the sides turned out completely straight (even without blocking). You can take a look at the blanket here: https://raffamusadesigns.com/crochet-solid-hexagons-throw-blanket/
I’m trying to follow the instructions for the flat side half hexagon but I’m confused. The way it’s written I come up with 3 trebles because of the (…) TWICE on row 2. What am I missing? What am I supposed to be repeating to get the right number of stitches?
Hi, thank you for your message. You’re right, there was a mistake on row 2.
The correct pattern is:
Row 2. Ch 2 and turn. Dc inc 2, ([dc 1, tr 1, dc 1] in next st, dc inc 1) twice, dc inc 1 in last st. (14 dc, 2 tr)
I corrected it in the blog post as well.
Hopefully, it makes more sense now.
Best,
Raffaella
