If you love granny squares and feel ready to experiment with shapes, you’ll love this classic crochet granny hexagon!
In previous tutorials, I already showed you how to crochet a solid granny hexagon and a completely solid hexagon without any gaps.
But if you don’t mind a hole or two in your work, the classic granny hexagon can be a beautiful building block for your crochet blankets, pillowcases, coasters, and many other projects!
Keep in mind that this pattern is for a flat hexagon! So, this granny hexagon pattern won’t work if you want to make the iconic hexagon sweater that is so popular right now.
When you scroll down to the tutorial, you’ll see two sections.
- First, you’ll find a quick pattern for the granny hexagon, which is perfect if you’re experienced and know how to read a crochet pattern.
- Then, you’ll find a more detailed step-by-step granny hexagon tutorial. If you get lost with your stitches, make sure to check those photos!

HOW TO CROCHET A Granny HEXAGON – STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL
ROUND 1
Make a MC.
Note. If you do not like the MC, you can either ch 4 and join into the first ch to form a ring, or ch 4 and crochet the first round in the first-made ch.
- Step 1. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-2 sp);
- Step 2. (Dc 2, ch 2) 5 times, dc 1;

Round 2
- Step 1. Sl st into next ch-2 sp, ch 4;
- Step 2. Dc 2 in same ch-2 sp. This is your first corner, which is still missing one dc! We will add one more dc in this first ch-2 sp at the end of the round!
- Step 3. *ch 1, [dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 5 times;
- Step 4. Ch 1, dc 1 in first ch-2 sp, sl st into third-made ch. (24 dc, 6 ch-2 sps, 6 ch-1 sps).
Round 3
- Step 1. Sl st into next ch-2 sp, ch 4, dc 2 in same ch-2 sp (first corner), *ch 1, dc 2 in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] in next ch-2 sp (corner).
- Step 2. Repeat from * 5 times. Ch 1, dc 2 in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc 1 in first ch-2 sp, sl st into third-made ch. (36 dc, 6 ch-2 sps, 12 ch-1 sps).
Round 4
- Step 1. Sl st into next ch-2 sp, ch 4, dc 2 in same ch-2 sp (first corner), *(ch 1, dc 2 in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1, [dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] in next ch-2 sp (corner).
- Step 2. Repeat from * 5 times. (Ch 1, dc 2 in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1, dc 1 in first ch-2 sp, sl st into third-made ch. (48 dc, 6 ch-2 sps, 18 ch-1 sps).
ALL NEXT ROUNDS
- Work a [dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] corner in each ch-2 sp from the previous round.
- For the sides, dc 2 in each ch-1 sp from the previous round.
For every new round, you will add a (dc 2, ch 1) repeat on each side!
