Misty Grey Tunisian Crochet Poncho

The Misty Grey Tunisian Crochet Poncho was the very first design I contributed as a guest post on another blog.

This was already November last year (2019), and I shared it on the Underground Crafter blog. You can still find the original post here!

Two Stitches, Two Hook Sizes

For crocheting the Misty Grey Poncho, we will be using two different stitch combinations.

The Misty Grey Tunisian Crochet Poncho is the warm and cozy poncho that you'll want to wear this fall!

The bottom of the poncho, which I made in blue, is a Tunisian Simple Stitch band with some Tunisian puff stitch details. The puffs are distributed in such a way to create a zigzag effect that is very eye-catching and fun.

The main body of the poncho has a very elegant diagonal lattice texture, which is the result of alternating Tunisian cross stitches. The resulting fabric is quite thick, yet super soft and warm. And I simply love it! Your poncho will be the perfect go-to garment for those early fall days that are chilly but not yet freezing.

What Kind of Crochet Hook Will You Need?

You might be surprised by how differently two kinds of Tunisian crochet stitches can be. Here, I am talking about thickness, gauge, final width.

This is why I had to play around a bit with my gauge and hooks to make sure that the two stitch combinations of this poncho flowed nicely together.

For this, the best combination I could get was with a 6.5-mm hook, for the blue, puffy part, and a 10.0-mm hook for the diagonal lattice stitch part.

I am confident these hook sizes will work fine for you too. However, you might want to double-check your gauge before starting your poncho.

The Misty Grey Tunisian Crochet Poncho combines puff stitches with the diagonal lattice Tunisian stitch.

Construction of the Tunisian Crochet Poncho

The Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho consists of two main rectangular panels, A and B (see figure below), which are seamed together at the end.

Cowl Neck

When crocheting garments, having too many panels is kind of a nightmare for many makers. So, while I could not avoid making the body of the poncho in two separate panels, I tried to reduce the seaming for the cowl.

How?

By simply crocheting the cowl neck directly on the top side of B and part of the inner side of A.
If you look at the image below, it might be a lot clearer to understand what I am talking about.

And you might notice that we will be working on the wrong side of A and B!

This way, you will be able to fold your cowl neck and actually have the right side exactly where it is supposed to be.

Finishing Your Tunisian Crochet Poncho

Once you have A, B, and cowl neck ready, all is left is a little bit of seaming.

Seaming is never too fan and most crocheters hate it, including me by the way. However, sometimes it is really unavoidable.

But let’s stay positive on seaming Tunisian crochet panels! I think that seaming Tunisian crochet is super easy and there is no way you can miss a row because they all have a chain on the side that you can clearly see. So, sure thing, your seaming will be straight!

Finishing up your Misty Grey Tunisian crochet poncho requires a little bit of seaming.
