Tunisian Crochet and Light Drape – Yes, It Is Possible!

Before going on and looking at the more technical things, here, I’d love to talk a bit about the drape and the stitches that we will be using to build this top.

It is a common belief that Tunisian crochet can only produce a thick and heavy fabric. But that’s not true at all!

I guarantee you that you can make nice and light clothes with Tunisian crochet. Think anything for the summertime, from sleeveless T-shirts to swimsuit cover-ups.

How? Simply choose a lace-weight or fine yarn and a much bigger hook than the hook size recommended for that yarn! To me, it really is as simple as that.

That’s why, for my Tunisian crochet summer top, I used some very light bamboo/cotton/linen blend yarn from Ice Yarns which you would normally work with a 3.00/3.50 mm crochet hook. However, for my top, I used a 6.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook!

The Stitch Combo

I started experimenting with different combinations of stitches to finally come up with a 3-row repeat consisting of 1 row of Tunisian crochet simple stitch and 2 rows of Tunisian extended stitch worked as for a Tunisian knit stitch.

And the fun part? I love the wrong side of this stitch combination way better than the right side! So, I stitched up all my top, sewed it together, weaved in my ends, and turned it inside out!

However, feel free to choose whether you like to wear your top on the right or the wrong side!

Tunisian Crochet Summer Top - Stitch Pattern - Raffamusa Designs

Crochet Top Construction

To build the Tunisian Crochet Summer Top we are going to make two separate panels, the front and the back one.

For both panels, we’ll be working bottom-up and crocheting the entire panel as a single piece.

For the straps, you’ll not have to cut yarn and join again, and we’ll see how later in the pattern.

This top pattern requires some seaming for the sides and the straps.

Materials

  • Sport (2, Fine) Weight Yarn (18 wpi). I used Spring Garden by Ice Yarns.
  • 6.5-mm (K/10.5 US, 3 UK) Tunisian Crochet Hook with a Cable Extension of at least 20” (50 cm).
To chose the right yarn, compare the Wraps per inch

Special Stitches

Tunisian Foundation Row
Please, refer to this step-by-step tutorial on how to make a Tunisian crochet foundation row.

Tunisian Extended Stitch (Tes)
To learn how to crochet the Tes, check this step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet the Tunisian Extended Stitch.
However, keep in mind that this pattern only uses Tes as for a Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks). This means that you have to execute a Tes by inserting the hook into the next st as you would do for a regular Tks.

Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss)
You can find how to crochet the Tunisian Simple Stitch in this tutorial.

Standard Tunisian Return
Yo, pull through the first loop on your hook, *yo, pull through two loops*. Repeat in between * for the stitches on your hook. At the end of the return pass, you will only have one loop on your hook.

If you would like to get more help with the Return pass, you can take a look at the very bottom of the step-by-step tutorial on how to make a Tunisian foundation row.

Pay Attention that in this pattern, the decreases are made in the return pass by closing two stitches together.

How to Work the Decreases

You will be working all your decreases on either the left or right side of your panel.

In this pattern, the left side of your work is the one on the left when you have your stitches on the hook and the front of your work facing up (so, facing you). In the same way, the right side is the side on the right when you are facing your work on the hook.

How to crochet a Tunisian crochet decrease on the left side of your work

Decrease on the Left

To make one Tunisian crochet decrease on the LEFT side, you will have to directly yo and pull yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook.

To make two or more Tunisian crochet decrease on the LEFT side, yo and pull yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook for the first decrease. For all the remaining decreases, yo and pull through three loops (the first loop is your working yarn and the other two are the two sts you are closing together).

Decrease on the Right

To make one Tunisian crochet decrease on the RIGHT side, work your return pass until you have three loops remaining on your hook (1 loop is your working yarn and two loops are two of your sts). Then, yo and pull through all three loops on your hook.

How to crochet a Tunisian crochet decrease on the right side of your work

To make two Tunisian crochet decreases on the RIGHT side, work your return pass until you have five loops remaining on your hook (1 loop is your working yarn and four loops are four of your sts). Then, yo and pull through the first three loops on your hook. Now, you’ll have three loops on your hook. Once more, yo and pull through all three loops on your hook.

How to Crochet on a Decrease

After you have your decreases, you might be wondering how to treat those two sts that are now one. So, with the exception of the very first stitch, which you will always skip whether or not you have a decrease in the row below, for all the other decreases, just work your next st into both of those joined sts.

In the images below, you can see how I made my Tunisian extended stitches as for Tunisian knit stitches after I had made 2 decreases on the left and two decreases on the right in the previous row.

1. Skip the very first stitch.
2. Insert your hook under both loops/stitches of the next decrease.
3. Bring your hook to the back of the work as you normally do with a Tunisian knit stitch.
4. Yarn over and draw up a loop.

How to crochet on a Tunisian crochet decrease on the right side

5. Yarn over again and draw up another loop.
6. When you are at a new decrease, repeat steps 2-5 to crochet the next extended stitch as for a knit stitch.
7-8. Crochet the last stitch by inserting your hook under both stitches of the last decrease.

Pattern Notes

  • Always skip the very first st.
  • If the pattern states to make a certain number of Tss at the beginning of a row, the very first vertical bar is included in the indicated number of stitches.
  • The first stitch is included in the stitch count.
  • The last stitch is worked under both loops of the final ch from the previous row.
  • Pay attention to the instructions for the return pass. If there are no instructions for the return pass, make a Standard Tunisian Return. Pay attention whenever you see instructions for the return pass because those are the rows with decreases!
  • To decide which is the left or right side, always look at your work when you have your stitches on the hook and the front of your work facing up (so, facing you).
  • The instructions are written for size M with the adaptation for the other sizes reported within brackets.
  • In round brackets, you’ll find the indications for the other sizes as follows: (XS, S, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)
  • The total stitch count for size M is indicated within square brackets at the end of each row.
