Crochet Granny Heart Grocery Bag - Raffamusa Designs

Although nowadays, most supermarkets switched to compostable materials for their produce bags, having a few reusable market bags is definitely a good (and greener) choice.

Because at the end of the day, those plastic bags will still end up in the garbage, and “no waste” is always better than waste, even if biodegradable!

Crochet Granny Heart Produce Bag - Raffamusa Designs

The Granny Heart Market Bag is a fun and functional tote bag that you can use for your groceries, for a day on the beach, for a picnic at the park, or for a sunny downtown stroll.

This tote is made by joining two granny square panels, each made with 4 large heart granny squares.

So, this bag is a celebration of Granny Square Day (August 15th!) and a more sustainable lifestyle!

Assembly

Divide the 8 heart squares into two groups of 4.

Using the whip stitch and yarn B, join the 4 granny squares in each of the two groups forming two panels of 2 by 2 heart squares (photos 1 and 2).

WS sides facing, place the two panels on top of each other.

Use the whip stitch and yarn B to join the two panels starting from the top, left corner, moving down to the left side, the bottom, and to the right side.

Body Finishing

With your crochet hook, join B in any ch-1 sp on the top side (the open side at the top of the bag) of one of the panels.

Round 1. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp here and throughout), *sk 3 sts, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * all around. Sl st in third-made ch to join.

At the seaming points, sk the ch-2 corner sp of the current square and [dc 3] on the side of the seaming, sk the ch-2 corner sp of the next square, and continue crocheting from the next ch-1 sp.

(40 groups of 3 dc, 40 ch-1 sps)

Round 2. Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, *sk 3 sts, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * all around. Sl st in third-made ch to join. (40 groups of 3 dc, 40 ch-1 sps)

Round 3. Repeat round 2.

Round 4. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc all around working 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp from the previous round. Sl st in first st to join. (160 sts)

Fasten off and weave in your ends (photo 3).

Handles

(Make 2)

With B, ch 201.

Row 1. Sc across starting from the second ch from hook. (200 sts)

Row 2. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn. Sc across. (200 sts)

Rows 3-5 (3 rows). Repeat row 2.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Assembly of the Handles

Position each end of one handle approximately in the center of the top heart squares of one panel (photo 4).

It might be useful to measure the distance from the sides of the panel so that the handles are symmetrical.

Make sure not to twist the handle.

Once you’re sure of the position of the handle, bring the end to the inside of the bag (photo 5), and with a length of yarn B, seam it in place.

Repeat the same for each end of both handles.

Weave in all your ends.
