Learn how to crochet a simple granny pentagon with this free step-by-step tutorial!
As I shared in my post about crochet pentagons, over the next few days, I’ll be sharing a few tutorials on how to crochet different kinds of basic pentagons.
Since the granny stitch is definitely the kind of all crochet stitches, I decided to start with a classic granny stitch pentagon tutorial.
First, we’ll take a look at the basic pattern in one solid color, and then, we’ll add a bit of fun and learn how to join new yarn to crochet a pentagon in multiple colors.

HOW TO CROCHET A GRANNY Pentagon – STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL
ROUND 1
Make a MC.
Note. If you do not like the MC, you can either ch 4 and join into the first ch to form a ring, or ch 4 and crochet the first round in the first-made ch.
- Step 1. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-2 sp);
- Step 2. (Dc 3, ch 2) 4 times, dc 2. Join the round with a sl st into the third-made ch (see pink arrow in photo 2). (15 dc, 5 ch-2 sps).
Round 2
- Step 3. Sl st into the next ch-2 sp (see the pink arrow in photo 3).
- Step 4. Ch 4.
- Step 5. [Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp, *[dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in each of the next 4 ch-2 sp (see the pink arrows in photo 5). [Dc 2] in the first ch-2 sp (see the blue arrows in photo 5);
- Step 6. Sl st into the third-made ch (see the fpink arrow in photo 6). (30 dc, 5 ch-2 sps).
Round 3
- Step 7. Sl st into the next ch-2 sp, ch 4, [dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp;
- Step 8. *[Dc 3] in the sp between the next two dc-3 blocks (see the first, top, left black arrow in photo 7), [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp (see the next pink arrow in photo 7). Repeat from * 4 times. [Dc 3] in the sp between the next two dc-3 blocks (see the top, right black arrow in photo 7), [dc 2] in the first ch-2 sp (see the blue arrow in photo 7), sl st into the third-made ch. (45 dc, 5 ch-2 sps).
Round 4
As for the previous rounds, sl st into the first ch-2 sp, ch 4, and [dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp.
To complete the round, [dc 3] in each sp between two dc-3 blocks (indicated by the black arrows in the photo below), and [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in each ch-2 sp corner (indicated by the pink arrow in the photo below).
When you’re back at the first ch-2 sp (see the blue arrow in the picture for round 4), [dc 2] and join with a sl st into the third-made ch. (60 dc, 5 ch-2 sps).
Continue to grow your pentagon following the same pattern logic as for round 4.
With each round, you will add one new dc-3 block on each side of your pentagon, meaning that you will increase by 15 dc sts per round!
How to Change Color
When you want to make a multicolored pentagon, all you need to do is to fasten off the yarn at the end of one round and join the new color.
To join a new color, simply place the new yarn behind any ch-2 corner of your granny pentagon, as shown in the first photo below.
Then, ch 4 with the new yarn, and [dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as joining (photo 2).
Now, continue the round as normal (photo 3)!
