If you want to keep your edges straight, the chainless starting treble crochet is the best way to start a new row of treble crochet stitches.

That’s quite a statement, “…the best way…“.

Of course, as with many things in crochet and life, the same thing can be done in many different ways, and there is probably no best way to do something.

So, let’s rephrase it. This is my favorite method to start a new row when I am working in treble crochet.

Cool, much better!

So, let’s take a look at the main ways of turning row in treble crochet, and let me show you why I like the chainless method more than the others.

HOW TO START A NEW ROW IN Treble CROCHET

When working in treble crochet, there are two most popular ways in which you can start a new row.

METHOD 1: CH 4 AND SKIP 1

When you chain 4 right at the beginning of a row, those initial chains count as one treble crochet. So, obviously, you skip the first stitch and start treble crocheting into the second stitch.

Pros

Easy, no brainer.

Cons

Every row has a little gap at the beginning because the initial ch-4 is not as thick as one regular treble crochet.

METHOD 2: CH 3, DO NOT SKIP ANY STS

Another common way to begin a new double crochet row is to chain 3 and treble crochet in each stitch from the previous row. In this case, the initial ch-3 does not count as one treble crochet.

Pros

Very easy.
Does not cause any gaps in your project.

Cons

The initial 3 chains will stick out. As a result, the edges of your project have some sort of little steps.

Method 3: Chainless Starting Treble Crochet

The solution to all these problems, steps or gaps, is the chainless starting treble crochet method!

If you’re familiar with the chainless starting double crochet, learning the treble is really easy.

However, even if you have never tried chainless starting stitches before, learning is not difficult. It might just require some practice!
