[New!] Tunisian Crochet Trellis Lace Stitch – Photo & Video Tutorial

The Tunisian crochet Trellis Lace stitch is a new afghan stitch with a beautiful geometric lace texture.

I recently used this stitch for a couple of projects and I love it. It is lacy but not too much, so it is perfect for making lightweight but warm projects with Tunisian crochet.

Here are a few pattern ideas using this stitch:

It took me a while to find a good name for this stitch after I could only come up with something super long like Tunisian Lace Lattice Bamboo stitch.

But come on, that’s obviously too long! Even though it had all the elements of this stitch encapsulated in the name. Here’s why…

For the way it is crocheted, this stitch is similar to the Tunisian Bamboo stitch. However, it has a lace component added to it.

Moreover, the pattern works over a 3-row repeat, and at each row, there is a shift of one stitch to the left (or to the right if you are left-handed).

This shifting of the pattern results in a sort of diagonal lattice, very similar to the one of the Tunisian Diagonal Lattice stitch.

Of course, it is going to be easier to understand once you start trying this stitch.

I prepared both a photo tutorial with written instructions and a video tutorial. So, grab some yarn and hook, and let’s start!

How to Fix the Slanting

Here, I really feel like adding a little note about choosing the right hook for the yarn you’re using.

Since the Tunisian trellis stitch progresses in a diagonal direction, it will tend to bias your project and make it slant to the left (or right if you are left-handed).

There are two things you can do to fix the slant:

  • Block your project;
  • Or go up in hook size!

Normally, Tunisian crochet already requires a larger hook than regular crochet. However, for this stitch, you need to stretch that concept even more.

So, instead of using an 8 mm hook for Aran weight yarn, you might want to try your 9 or 10 mm hook!

I suggest you make a little swatch and check if the yarn/hook combination that you’re using is causing a lot of slanting. If it is, simply go up 1 or 2 hook sizes!

Tunisian Crochet Trellis Lace Stitch – Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial

Start with a Tunisian foundation row with a multiple of 3 + 2 sts.

For this tutorial, I made a foundation row of 23 sts (3*7 = 21 + 2 = 23 sts).

Please, check this free tutorial HERE to learn how to crochet a classic Tunisian foundation row!

Row 1

Tss 4 (the first loop on your hook counts as your first Tss). Grab the second Tss and pull it over the next 2 sts off the hook (photos 1-2).

*Tss 3, pull the first Tss of the 3 you just made over the next 2 sts and off the hook. Repeat from * until you have only 1 st left on your foundation row. Work the last st under both vertical bars.
