Beehive Baby Blanket – Stunning Honeycomb Tunisian Crochet Pattern

This Beehive Baby Blanket is the sweetest and most textured Tunisian crochet blanket ever! And that honeycomb texture does not come from the honeycomb stitch…

I really loved designing this blanket at every stage of the designing process. Yes, including those couple of times that I had to frog a day’s worth of crocheting!

Bees and beehives have been a recurring theme in my crochet life recently, and so have Tunisian crochet puffs. With the Tunisian Beehive Baby Blanket, I brought together my passion for bees and puffs to create this beautifully textured baby blanket.

Let’s Talk Stitches

In order to crochet the Tunisian Beehive Baby Blanket, you will need to use three different Tunisian crochet stitches:

Just before we jump into the pattern, I would like to spend a few words about the open Tunisian puff stitch. Let’s say that I kind of made up the name for this stitch to distinguish it from a regular Tunisian puff stitch.

I recently published an in-depth tutorial about the open puff and the regular Tunisian puff stitch, and you can see it here.

What is important to keep in mind is that:

  1. the open Tunisian puff stitch is worked in the corresponding vertical bar two rows below
  2. it is an open puff, so there is no need to close it by chaining one at the end.

Tunisian Foundation Row
This pattern assumes that you know how to start a Tunisian crochet foundation row. If you need any help with that, please, check this step-by-step tutorial.

Open Tunisian Puff Stitch (Puff)
Identify the next vertical bar two rows below. This is the vertical bar just below the next stitch. *Yo. As for a tss, insert your hook from right to left under the next vertical bar from two rows below, yo, and pull up a loop. Repeat from * other two times inserting your hook always into the same vertical bar. Yo, draw yarn through all 6 loops on your hook.

Crochet the next tss normally into the vertical bars of the last row.

You can find more detailed instructions on how to crochet Tunisian puff stitch in this photo tutorial.

Standard Tunisian Return (Return)
Yo, pull through the first loop on your hook, *yo, pull through two loops*. Repeat in between * for all the loops on your hook until you will only have one loop on your hook.

Tunisian Reverse Stitch (Trs)
Bring your crochet hook to the back of the work. Identify the back vertical bar of the next st. Insert your hook from right to left (if you are right-handed, or from left to right if you are left-handed) in the back vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop.
You can find a step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet the Tunisian reverse stitch here.

Pattern Notes

  1. Quanto è bello !
I’m an ancient Aussie living in an unremarkable ‘city’ in Victoria; and I simply love coming across people like you, Raffaella: my favourite blog of all belongs to an amazing woman in The Netherlands, and I am an appassionata of everything Italian. You will guess, therefore, at my delight when finding your blog. 🙂
Love tunisian ! – love this blanket !
Complimenti, bella; spero che saremo amiche.
