Crochet Star Stitch Fingerless Gloves – Free Pattern

When the winter starts fading into spring, and the days get a bit warmer, it is time for less goofy wearables and accessories. Forget big mittens and chunky gloves, and join me with a pair of Star Stitch Fingerless Gloves!

Star Stitch Fingerless Gloves - Free Crochet Pattern - Raffamusa Designs

Fingerless gloves are perfect during the transition periods. You know, during fall for example, when it is still not that cold, or around this time of the year for the last acts of winter.

I personally like wearing fingerless mitts also when I am inside working at my computer. My hands are always so cold that I really appreciate a warm layer of soft wool while still having the freedom to use my fingers!

Back Loop Only (BLO)
Learn how to crochet Back Loop Only (BLO) stitches in this blog post.

Decrease (Dec)
A decrease consists of 2 sts worked together so that they will count as 1 st in the next row or round.

Half Double Crochet Two Together (Hdc2Tog)
The Hdc2tog is simply a hdc dec. Here’s how I recommend you do it for this pattern.

Yo, insert your hook into the indicated stitch, yo, and pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook). Insert your hook into the next st, yo, and pull up a loop (4 loops on your hook). Yo, and draw yarn through all four loops on your hook.

Single Crochet Foundation Row (FSC)
Please, see a step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet the foundation single crochet here.

Star Stitch in the Round (Star)
The star stitch used in this pattern is a slight modification of the classical star stitch. To learn how to crochet the star stitch for this pattern, please, take a look at the step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet the star stitch in the round.

Pattern Notes

  • If the pattern says “hdc 2”, you have to crochet 1 hdc into each of the next 2 sts.
  • (…) – Repeat the instruction within brackets for the indicated times.
  • These gloves are worked in the round! So, do NOT join your rounds.
  • The stitch count is indicated within brackets at the end of each round’s instructions.

Gauge

14 BLO hdc for 8 rows in 4″ (10 cm).

Construction

These fingerless gloves are worked in the round from the bottom (finger side) up (brim).

The first “round” is actually a sc foundation row. Make sure to check this step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet the single crochet foundation row.

After crocheting the indicated number of sts in your foundation row, start working in the round.

To do this, simply bring the beginning of your foundation row close to your hook, and keeping your working yarn above your sts (as shown in the picture below), start crocheting in the first st.

Make sure to keep the right side of your foundation row toward the outside!

FSC - How to start working in the round - Star Stitch Fingerless Gloves - Raffamusa Designs

Brim

The brim is crocheted directly attached to the body of the glove making a row of sl sts for each st around. So, if the body of the glove has 26 sts, the brim will be made of 26 rows.

See an example of how to crochet the brim directly on your work in this video tutorial by Toni of TL Yarn Crafts (although she uses single crochet sts, the technique and the concepts are the same for a sl st brim)

However, in order to get a better fit, I suggest you decrease a few rows compared to the st count of the glove. See how to do this in the box below.

How to make a slip stitch decrease to attach the brim of the Crochet Star Stitch Beanie
How to Sl St the BLO of the Next Two Sts Together
Step 1. Insert your hook into the next BLO.
Step 2. Twist your hook and insert it into the next BLO.
Step 3. Yo and draw yarn through all the loops on your hook.
