Learn how to crochet a single crochet rectangle in the round with this free pattern and step-by-step tutorial.
The single crochet rectangle in the round can be a very useful shape for different Amigurumi parts. Or you could use your rectangles to make the bottoms of bags and baskets.
Single Crochet Rectangles in Any Size
The size and shape of the rectangle can vary quite a bit based on the number of chains in your foundation chain.
If you make a short foundation chain, your rectangle will be kind of chubby. On the other hand, with a longer foundation chain, your rectangles will get more and more elongated.
One nice thing is that no matter how many chains you start with, the short sides of your rectangles will always have the same stitch count. Of course, this is true for an equal number of rounds crocheted!
However, the long sides will vary in stitch numbers quite a bit and you’ll have to figure out how many chains to start with if you need an exact number of stitches for a given number of rounds.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s practice a bit and get familiar with the pattern of the single crochet rectangle in the round.
In this post, I’ll give you the general pattern for making a single crochet rectangle starting with any number of chains. Then, I’ll guide you through one example where I started my rectangle by making 8 foundation chains.

Patterns Notes

- […] – Repeat the instructions within square brackets all in the same indicated st.
Single Crochet Rectangle in the Round – Quick General pattern
- You can choose to crochet in the round in a continuous spiral like for Amigurumi or join each round with a sl st in the first st.
Ch any number of chs.
Round 1. [Sc 3] in the second ch from hook, sc 1 in each ch until you have one ch left, [sc 3] in the last ch. Crocheting on the other loops of the initial ch, sc 1 in each ch across (do not add any more sts in the first ch where you made the first 3 sc sts!).
Round 2. *[Sc 3] in first st, sc 1, [sc 3] in next st, sc 1 in each sc until the next group of 3-sc from the previous round. Repeat from * twice.
Round 3. *Sc 1, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 3, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 1 in each st until the next group of 3-sc from the previous round. Repeat from * twice.
Round 4. Sc 2, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 5, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 1 in each st until the next group of 3-sc from the previous round. Sc 1, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 5, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 1 in each remaining st.
Keep growing your rectangle as follows:
- [Sc 3] in the central sc of each group of 3-sc;
- Sc 1 in each remaining st.
Then, fasten off. If you worked in the round in a spiral, leave a long tail, and make an invisible join.
Single Crochet Rectangle in the Round – Step-by-Step Tutorial
In this example, we’ll start with a ch 8 (photo 1).
Round 1
[Sc 3] in the second ch from hook. For a neater look, crochet in the back bumps of the initial ch (photo 2). Sc 5, [sc 3] in the last ch. For convenience, mark the first and third sts of each group of 3-dc (photo 3). Crocheting on the other loops of initial ch, sc 5. (16 sts, photo 4)
Round 2
*[Sc 3] in the first st. Mark the first and second sts (in photo 5, the first st is marked with gold st marker and the second st with green st marker).
Sc 1, [sc 3] in next marked st (see arrow in photo 5) and move the st marker to the second st of 3-sc. Sc 5 (photo 6).
Repeat from * twice. (24 sts, photo 7)
For each new round, move the gold st marker to the first st of the round, and each green st marker to the corresponding middle st of the corner (second sc of 3-sc sts).
Round 3. Sc 1, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 3, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 7, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 3, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 6. (32 sts, photo 8)
Round 4. Sc 2, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 5, [sc 3] in the next st, sc 9, [sc 3], sc 5, [sc 3], sc 7. (40 sts, photo 9)
