Learn how to crochet a flat double-crochet star and make beautiful baby blankets, pillows, keychains, Christmas decorations, appliques and patches, and much more!
This pattern is perfect if you want to crochet a super simple star only using double crochet stitches. If you don’t like crocheting decreases, don’t worry. There are no decreases at all, just double crochets, increases, and a few skipped stitches!
I used my star to make a star-shaped pillow for a baby girl’s nursery room. To make the pillow, I crocheted the star using some left-over, pink yarn from my stash. Then, I sewed the star on some fabric and used more fabric to make the back of the pillow. As a finishing touch, I added a ruffled border all around the star.
Of course, you can use your star to make anything from little decroations and appliques, to blankets, festive placemats, or anything with a star shape!

Double Crochet Star Pattern
Make a MC, and ch 4 (photo 1, these 4 chains count as a dc and a ch-2 sp).
Alternatively, ch 5 and crochet round 1 in first-made ch.
Round 1
(Dc 2, ch 2) 4 times in MC, dc 1, sl st in third-made ch (see arrow in photo 2) to join the round. (10 dc sts, 5 ch-2 sps, photo 3)
Round 2
Sl st in first ch-2 sp, and ch 4 (photo 4).
[Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as initial ch-4 (photo 5). *Sk next 2 sts (indicated by the grey dots in photo 5), [dc 3, ch 3, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp.
Repeat from * 4 times (photo 6). Sk next 2 dc sts, [dc 2] in initial ch-2 sp (indicated by the white arrow in photo 6).
Sl st in third-made ch to join the round (photo 7).
Round 3
Sl st in first ch-2 sp, and ch 4 (photo 8). [Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as the initial ch-4 (photo 9). *Dc 1 in each of next 2 sts (indicated by the pink arrows in photo 9).
Sk next 2 sts (indicated by the grey dots in photo 10), dc 1 in each of the next 2 sts (indicated by the pink arrows in photo 10). [Dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in next ch-2 sp (indicated by the black arrow in photo 11).
Repeat from * 4 times.
Dc 1 in each of next 2 sts, sk 2, dc 2, [dc 2] in the initial ch-2 sp (indicated by the white arrow in photo 11). Sl st in the third-made ch to join (photo 12).
Round 4
Sl st in first ch-2 sp, and ch 4. [Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as the initial ch-4 (photo 13). *Dc 4, sk 2, dc 4 (see arrows for dc and dots for skipped sts in photo 13 and photo 14). [Dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp (indicated by the black arrow in photo 14).
Repeat from * 4 times.
Dc 4, sk 2, dc 4, [dc 2] in the initial ch-2 sp (indicated by the white arrow in photo 14). Sl st in the third-made ch to join (photo 15).
Round 5
Sl st in first ch-2 sp, and ch 4. [Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as the initial ch-4. *Dc 6, sk 2, dc 6. [Dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 times. Dc 6, sk 2, dc 6, [dc 2] in the initial ch-2 sp. Sl st in the third-made ch to join (photo 16).
Keep growing your star by following the same pattern logic as for round 5 keeping in mind that at each new round, you’ll have 2 more dc sts on each side of the skipped sts!
So, for example, the pattern for round 6 is:
Sl st in first ch-2 sp, and ch 4. [Dc 3] in the same ch-2 sp as the initial ch-4. *Dc 6+2= 8, sk 2, dc 6+2= 8. [Dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in the next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 times. Dc 6+2= 8, sk 2, dc 6+2= 8, [dc 2] in the initial ch-2 sp. Sl st in the third-made ch to join.
When you’re happy with the size of your star, fasten off and weave in your ends.
