Crochet the cutest woodland-themes baby blanket with the patterns of the Woodland Granny Squares collection!
With the woodland granny squares, you can create a world of forest animals, magical trees, and sweet fruits from the woods!
These granny squares are perfect for crocheting baby blankets, pillowcases, wall hangings, and other beautiful decorations for a woodland-themed baby nursery or child’s room.
The woodland granny squares are similar to the other granny squares of previous collections in that the basic square pattern is the one of the Simple Circle Granny Square.
In case you missed them, here are the previous granny square collections:
- Halloween Granny Squares
- Christmas Granny Squares
- Spring Farm Granny Squares
- Summertime Granny Squares
- Valentine’s Day Granny Squares
Add this pattern collection to your Ravelry queue HERE and favorite it (– thank you!). Or save it for later by pinning it to your favorite crochet board on Pinterest using this pin!

Woodland Granny Squares Crochet Along (CAL)
As with the other collections, the patterns of the Woodland Granny Squares will be released as part of a Crochet Along (CAL) that will run from August 5th to September 12th, 2024.
How does the Crochet Along work?
If you’re new to the concept of crochet along (CAL), in short, during a CAL, the designer (me, in this case) will release all the parts of a pattern one at a time so that everyone can crochet at the same pace.
CALs can be free or paid. In the case of the Woodland Granny Squares CAL, it will be a paid CAL running on Ravelry HERE (see how it works below).
Of course, some of the patterns will also be released here on the blog for free but I cannot guarantee when they’ll be released!
During the CAL, you can also get the support of the CAL community. How?
Post your progress pics and ask any questions you might have on my Facebook group HERE.
So, to recap, here’s how the CAL will work:
- The CAL will run on Ravelry HERE, which means that I will upload the new patterns on Ravelry
- Once I upload a new set of patterns, I’ll send you a notification on Ravelry and an e-mail. Then, you can go to your pattern library, refresh the listing (you’ll see a sort of refreshing icon below the pattern), and the new files will be automatically uploaded at no extra cost to you.
- At the end of the CAL, I will upload a unique file, with all the squares, tutorials, instructions for joining, and the pattern for the border, so that you can choose if you want to keep the separate files or update to a single e-book.

- Optional: 5.0 mm (H/8 US, 6 UK) Crochet Hook for joining your squares

I used Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (302 yds / 276 m per 100 g) in the following colors and amounts:

- Brown – Coffee Bean (110) – 1 skein

- Cream – Vanilla Cream (107) – 6/7 skeins
- Dark Green – Grass Green (129) – 1 skein

- Tea Rose – Tea Rose (142) – scraps
- White – Champagne White (102) – 1 skein
- Yellow – Glorious Gold (66) – 1 skein
HOW MUCH YARN WILL YOU NEED?
The indicated yardage is enough for a crib-sized blanket (40″ by 55″, 102 by 140 cm). Of course, you won’t use all the skeins of the different colors, but you’ll definitely need all the skeins of the background color, which is cream in my case – but feel free to change it or even use several colors as background.
If you don’t want to crochet a blanket, you’ll have to calculate how much yarn to buy depending on what project you want to do with your grannies.
In general, keep in mind that:
- Each square measures about 5.5″ (14 cm)
- and uses approximately 40 m/43 yds of DK yarn crocheting with a 4.0-mm (G/6 USA, 8 UK) crochet hook.
Yarn Alternatives
As for the previous CALs, I crocheted my granny squares using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, but feel free to choose any equivalent yarn or even use Aran weight yarn (with the appropriate hooks)!
Just make sure that the color choice is wide enough so that you are not limited to a few colors.
Looking online, I found that these yarns below are good substitutes, and they have many colors to choose from:
- Stylecraft Special DK Acrylic Yarn on LoveCrafts – I really like this yarn. I tried it, and sometimes, I mix it with Paintbox Yarns Simply DK if I miss a color or something.
- Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK – I never used it but I trust Stylecraft and this line has the warmest colors for a woodland-themed project!
- Hayfield Bonus DK – This seems like an interesting option! Many colors and many good reviews…
- Mighty Stitch Yarn on WeCrochet – I have used this yarn and it is extremely soft but tends to pill.
- Deramores Studio DK Acrylic – I never used it, so I cannot say much about it. The same goes for the next one.
- King Cole Pricewise DK on LoveCrafts
