The crochet Vanna Blanket Square is a fun and textured afghan block that is just the perfect addition to your stitch sampler afghan blanket.
For this square, I used a variation of the Wrapped Arrow Stitch. Instead of crocheting rows back and forth, I started from the center and worked in the round.
This means that you can easily customize the pattern to make it as big or small as you need it. All you need to do is to either add or remove a few rounds!
The Wrapped Arrow stitch is a very solid yet soft stitch that is great for winter makes.

Materials
- 6.5-mm (K/10.5 USA, 3 UK) Hook
- Aran Weight (4, Medium) Yarn. I used Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand.
- Tapestry Needle
Yarn & Yardage
For my squares, I used ~ 142 yds (130 m) Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand but you can use any yarn that you might have in your stash. Here are a few ideas:
- Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Aran
- Stylecraft Special Aran
- Bernat Super Value
- Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran
- Lion Brand Wool Ease
- Red Heart With Love
- Caron Simply Soft
Size
I would like to make a small note about the finished size of the square.
Using a 6.5-mm hook and worsted-weight yarn, your square will measure about 13″ (33 cm).
If you want a 12″ (30 cm) square, then you need to go down in hook size and use a 5.0-mm hook.
Gauge
With your 6.5-mm hook, 4 rounds worked according to the pattern in 4” (10 cm).

Pattern Notes
- If the pattern says “dc 2”, it means that you have to crochet 1 dc into each of the next 2 sts.
- (…) – Repeat the instruction within brackets for the indicated times.
- *… – Repeat the instructions from the * for the indicated number of times.
- […] – Crochet the instructions within brackets into the same indicated st.
- Join each round with a sl st between the last and first st of the round.
- The stitch count is indicated within brackets at the end of each round’s instructions.
- With the exception of the first round, the initial chains do not count as sts. Thus, they are not included in the stitch count.

At the beginning of the round, the dc part of the drop-FPtr/dc tog goes in the very first st of the round! Make sure not to go into the next st!
Keep in mind that on the next sides, the drop-FPtr/dc tog will be around the same st where you will have made a dc/drop-FPtr tog.
