Crochet Twisted Fringes – Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1

Position your yarn and hook in the stitch or space where you want to start crocheting your twisted fringes.

In the example shown in these pictures, I’ll be crocheting fringes around a simple granny square.

Step 2

Pull the yarn to create a longish loop (see photo 2). The longer the loop, the longer the fringe.

You can use a ruler to make loops always of the same length and thus fringes of the same size!

For example, here, I pulled a loop of about 4″ (10 cm), and got twisted fringes of about 1.4″ (3.5 cm).

If you don’t have a ruler, you could use your hook or your span as a reference, or any other object.

You’ll probably have to try a few loop lengths to find the one that gives you the fringes of your desired length.

Step 3

Holding the base of the loop in place with your non-dominant hand (photo 3), start twisting the loop by rotating your crochet hook always in the same direction (photos 4 and 5).

Count the number of twists you make if you want to get consistent fringes!

Step 4

While still holding the base of the loop, grab the center of the fringe with your pinky finger to prevent it from twisting (photo 6). Then, slip stitch back in the same stitch or space where you started the fringe (photo 7).

Step 5

Pull the fringe in the center (photo 8) and let it slowly twist (photo 9).

Step 6

Slip stitch in the next stitch or space to crochet the next twisted fringe.

Repeat steps 2-6 to add more fringes.

When you’re done, simply fasten off and weave in your ends.
