Keep your textures light and simple with the crochet spider stitch! This beautiful stitch only uses single crochets and chains, so it is perfect for beginners and more advanced crocheters alike.
HOW TO CROCHET THE Spider STITCH
The spider stitch pattern is very beginner-friendly because it only requires single crochets (sc) and chain spaces (ch). The basic idea is that you make a sc 1, ch 1, sc 1 all in the chain spaces from the previous row.
The only challenge of the spider stitch, especially if you’re a beginner crocheter, is to find the right chain space to place your stitches. But don’t worry, I’ll try to help you as much as possible with this clear step-by-step tutorial!
WHAT TO CROCHET WITH THE Spider STITCH
The spider stitch creates a solid fabric that is not too bulky and has quite some drape. It is very versatile and you can use it to crochet anything from Winter projects to lightweight vests and accessories for the warmer months.
As a final note, the spider stitch stretches more vertically than horizontally. This might be good to keep in mind in case you want to crochet wearables and want to use the natural stretch of the fabric.

Spider STITCH – STEP-BY-STEP CROCHET TUTORIAL
STEP 1 – Foundation chain
Ch a multiple of 2, i.e. make an even number of chains.
For this tutorial, I chained 16 (photo 1).
Steps 2 and 3 – Row 1
Working in the third ch from your hook (indicated by the white arrow in photo 2), sc 1.
Steps 4 and 5
Ch 1 (photo 4) and sc 1 more in the same ch (photo 5).
Step 6
Sk 1 chain (indicated by the black arrow in photo 5), and working in the next ch (indicated by the pink arrow in photo 5), [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1].
Step 7
Repeat step 6 until you have 1 stitch left (photo 7).
Step 8
Sc 1 in the last st.
Step 9 – Row 2
Ch 2 and turn.
Now is a good time to take a deeper look at the anatomy of your stitches.
You’ll see that the first st is the last sc from the previous row (indicated in grey in photo 9). Then, you have the first [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] group (in teal and pink in photo 9), and the skipped chain (in black in photo 9).
All the stitches of row 2 will go into the ch-1 sps of the [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] groups from the previous row.
Steps 10 and 11
Sk the first 2 sc sts, and in the next ch-1 sp (indicated by the pink arrow in photo 9 or the yellow st marker in photo 10), [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] (photo 11).
Step 12
*Sk 2, [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1] in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * until you get to the last group of sc-ch-sc from the previous row (photo 12).
Step 13
Sc 1 in turning ch-2 from the previous row (indicated by the pink arrow in photo 12).
