Around this time of the year, with schools starting again, Fall vibes make their way back into our craft rooms! And you know what I mean with fall vibes… Of course, it’s pumpkin time!
Normally, I crochet stuffed pumpkins. However, this year, I thought it would be fun to make a couple of crochet pumpkin appliques to add to basically anything in my kitchen!
I made pumpkin appliques in two different sizes.
The small pumpkins are great for earrings, magnets on the fridge, embellishments for potholders and dishcloths, or also for napkin rings for your Thanksgiving dinner.
The large pumpkin on the other hand is pretty big and it can even become a cute Halloween pumpkin coaster when you crochet it with some worsted weight yarn!

Size
You can use any yarn (also scrap yarn!) with the appropriate hook size.
To give you an idea of what size to expect for both the small and large pumpkins, I tried three different yarn weights and measured the final measurement.

This pattern is too small to accurately determine the gauge. Just keep in mind that the final size of the carrot will depend on the yarn and hook you use.

Small Pumpkin – Free Crochet Pattern
With A, make a MC.
Round 1. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc 12 in MC. Join the round with a sl st into the first st. (12 sts)
Round 2. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc 1, [hdc 1, dc 1], dc inc 2, [hdc inc 1, sc 1], sl st 2, [sc 1, hdc inc 1], dc inc 2, [dc 1, hdc 1], [sc 1, sl st] in the last st. (22 sts + the last sl st)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Stem
Join C in the last st of Round 1 with a sl st.
Row 1. Ch 2, sl st 1 in second ch from hook, sl st 1 in joining sl st, sl st into last st of Round 1. (3 sts)
Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Large Pumpkin Applique – Free Crochet Pattern
With A, make a MC.
Round 1. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc 12 in MC. Join the round with a sl st into the first st. (12 sts)
Round 2. Ch 2 (do not count as a st), (hdc inc 1, dc inc 1, [dc 1, tr inc 1], [tr inc 1, dc 1], dc inc 1, hdc inc 1) twice in the MC. Join the round with an invisible join. (28 sts)
Fasten off A.
Holding your work with the joining point of Round 2 to your right, join B in the fourth tr of the 4 tr on top (this is the top part of the pumpkin).
Row 3a. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc 1 in the same st where you joined, [hdc 1, dc 1], dc inc 1, tr inc 1, tr 3, tr inc 1, [tr 1, dc 1], dc inc 1, hdc inc 1, sl st 1. (19 sts)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Sk 2 sts from the last sl st of Row 3a, and join B in next st.
Row 3b. Ch 1 (counts as a st), hdc inc 1 in next st, dc inc 1, [dc 1, tr 1], tr inc 1, tr 3, tr inc 1, dc inc 1, [dc 1, hdc 1], [sc 1, sl st 1].
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
RS facing, join A in the first dc of Row 3a.
Row 4a. Ch 1 (counts as a st), sc 1 in next st, hdc inc 1, dc inc 2, dc 4, dc inc 1, [dc 1, hdc 1], hdc inc 1, sc 1, sl st 2.
RS facing, join A in the semi-last hdc of Row 3b.
