Here’s my go-to pattern to crochet a super cute owl granny square! This owl Afghan block is perfect for granny square blankets, pillowcases, and other creations using granny squares.
I first shared the crochet pattern of the owl granny square during the Halloween granny squares crochet along (CAL).
Then, I also used the same pattern for the Christmas granny squares blanket, where I added a snowy owl granny square to the bunch of festive blocks (let’s see if you can spot the snowy own in the blanket below!).
Finally, I’m sharing the pattern of the owl granny square here on the blog as part of the Woodland Granny Squares CAL!

How to Crochet an Owl Granny Square
In this pattern, the color directions are for making an owl granny square like the one shown below.
However, the step-by-step photos are from the owl granny square I made for my Halloween collection!
Feel free to use the colors that you like the most.
Granny Square
With your 4.0-mm hook, crochet a simple circle granny square with the following color scheme:
Rounds 1-4. Use fudge yarn.
Round 5-8. Use cream yarn.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Eyes
(Make 2)
With your 3.5-mm hook and white, make a MC.
Round 1. Hdc 11 in MC, sl st in the first st to join. (11 sts)
Round 2. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), hdc inc 11. Sl st in the first hdc to join. (22 sts)

Row 1. Sl st 5 starting from the second ch from hook. Ch 4, sl st 3 starting from the second ch from hook. Sl st in next st on initial 23-ch. Sl st 16.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Finishing
Attach the wings on the sides of the owl. Try to stay in the lower half of the body because the eyes will largely take the top part.
With a length of brown, embroider some V’s on the belly of the owl (photo 1).
Sew the eyes on the top half of the owl’s body and the branch (optional) just below round 4 (photo 2).
With green, embroider some small leaves around the branch. Using yellow, embroider the feet of the owl and the beak.
Using a length of black, embroider the eyes (photo 3).
Eyelashes
With your 3.5-mm hook, join brown in one of the sts at the top, left corner of the eye on your left (the right eye for the owl).
Row 1. [Ch 1, picot 1, sc 1] in same st, [sc 1, picot 1, sc 1] in next st, [sc 1, picot 1, sl st] in next st.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Repeat the same on the other eye by joining the yarn on the symmetrical st compared to where you finished the first eyelash (photos 4-5).
Weave in all your ends.
