  • 4.5-mm (7 USA, 7 UK) Crochet Hook
  • Aran (4, Medium) Weight Yarn
  • Black Embroidery Floss
  • Tapestry Needle

Yarn

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in the following colors:

  • A – Champagne White (603)
  • B – Lime Green (629)
  • C – Coffee Bean (611)
  • D – Vanilla Cream (608)

Feel free to use any yarn with the appropriate hook size.

4 rounds of a classic granny square in 4″ (10 cm).

Kiwi Fruit Granny Squares – Free Crochet Pattern

With A, make a MC.

Round 1 (RS). Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), sc 6 in MC, sl st in first st to join. (6 sts)

Fasten off A. RS facing, join B in any st from round 1.

Round 2. Ch 1, sc inc 6, sl st in first st to join. (12 sts)

Round 3. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc inc 12, sl st in first st to join. (24 sts)

Fasten off B. RS facing, join C in any st from round 3.

Round 4. Ch 1, (sc inc 1, sc 2) 8 times, sl st in first st to join. (32 sts)

Fasten off C. RS facing, join D in BLO of any st from round 4.

Squaring

Round 5. BLO sc 1 in same st as joining, *ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 3] in next st, ch 2, [BLO hdc 3] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, BLO sc 2. Repeat from * 3 times. Ch 1, sk 2, [BLO hdc 3] in next st, ch 2, [BLO hdc 3] in next st, ch 1, sk 2, BLO sc 1. Join with a sl st in first sc (photo 2).

Round 6. Sl st in next ch-1 sp and ch 2 (counts as the post of a dc), [dc 2] in same ch-1 sp, ch 1, *[dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, ([dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) twice. Repeat from * 3 times. [Dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in last ch-2 sp, ch 1, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a sl st in first dc (and not into initial ch-2!).

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

With a length of black embroidery floss, embroider the seeds of the kiwi.
