How to Crochet the Honeycomb Textured Stitch – Video Tutorial

The crochet Honeycomb Textured Stitch is a beehive-inspired pattern that mostly uses half double crochets and a good dose of front post stitches to create a beautiful honeycomb texture.

But don’t let the front post stitches scare you!

With a little patience and my step-by-step video tutorial, you’ll be able to master this stitch in no time!

Crochet Honeycomb Stitch

Normally, the honeycomb stitch is immediately associated with Tunisian crochet. However, this Honeycomb stitch is entirely made in classic crochet.

What I love about this stitch is the honeycomb texture of course, but also the fact that it mainly uses half double crochets.

The result is a solid fabric, which is very soft and warm, making this honeycomb stitch perfect for many different kinds of projects, such as:

  • Blankets and afghan blocks;
  • Winter accessories. For example, scarves, cowls, hats, and headbands;
  • Dishcloths and washcloths;
  • Home decor projects, including wall hangings and bags;
  • and many others!

In this post, I’ll explain how to crochet the Honeycomb Stitch flat, working in rows. However, you can also use it for patterns worked in the round!

Take a look at the pattern of the Honeycomb Slouchy Beanie HERE to see how to adapt the honeycomb stitch in the round!

Harmony Blanket Cal

The honeycomb stitch is featured in the Harmony Blanket CAL hosted and organized by Shannon of The Loophole Fox and Agat of Made by Gootie.

The Harmony Blanket CAL is a collaborative crochet along for which 12 different designers each designed a portion of what will be your most unique heirloom crochet blanket.

Harmony Blanket CAL - Finished Throw

The size of the finished throw blanket is 50″ by 60″ (127 by 152 cm), and the blanket is crocheted bottom-up adding each new stripe to the previous one, so no seaming is needed!

While the CAL is now finished, you can still crochet your Harmony blanket by getting the Harmony Blanket e-book HERE!

  1. I really liked this but being a perfectionist I wanted my cells to be more hexagonal than the slightly elongated diamonds that the above pattern gives. I did this by altering row 4 and row 8 to put a back post double crotchet on top of each FPtr from the row below. Then as my diagonal cell walls were now a little too loose I just made them regular FPtr instead of FPdtr. Obviously if you want to avoid back post stitches then my fix isn’t gonna be for you but if you want more uniform hexagonal cells give my tweak a try. Thanks for the initial inspiration though. My next variation is to see how it works with the cell borders in one colour against a contrasting background…so many ideas, so little time!
