These Holly Leaf and Berry Appliques are a cute Christmas embellishment idea.
You can use them for so many things! From making some cute Christmas ornaments to using them as Christmas gift tags, or to make Christmas magnets or DIY Christmas cards!
I started playing around with these patterns already last year when I making my Christmas Granny Squares.
However, other patterns got my attention and I neglected these small appliques until a few days ago when I got to use them to make some cute Christmas cards (watch the video tutorial here!).

Holly Leaf & Berry DIY Christmas Card – Video Tutorial
MATERIALS
- A small amount of Yarn of Choice
- Appropriate Hook Size
- Tapestry Needle
COLOR REFERENCE
- A – Green
- B – Red
Size
The pattern comes in 3 sizes, Small, Medium, and Large.
With DK weight cotton yarn (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK) and a 3.0-mm hook, your leaves will measure:
- Small – 0.9″ by 0.5″ (2.3 cm by 1.3 cm)
- Medium – 1.4″ by 0.9″ (3.5 cm by 2.3 cm)
- Large – 2″ by 1.2″ (5 cm by 3 cm)


GAUGE
This pattern is too small to accurately determine the gauge. Just keep in mind that the final size will depend on the yarn and hook you use.

Ch 2, sl st in the back bump of the first ch.

PATTERN NOTES
- If the pattern says to “sc 2”, it means that you have to crochet 1 sc in each of the next two sts.
- (…) – Repeat the instruction within round brackets for the indicated number of times.
- […] – Crochet the instruction within square brackets all in the same indicated st.


Crochet Holly Leaf Appliques – Free Christmas Patterns
Small Holly Leaf Applique
With A, ch 6.
Round 1. (Sl st 2, mini picot) twice. In the last ch, [sl st 1, ch 1, sl st 1]. Working on the other loops of the initial chain, sl st 1, mini picot, sl st 2, mini picot, sl st 1.
Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Medium Holly Leaf Applique
With A, ch 8.
Round 1. Sc 1 in the second ch from your hook, sc 1, hdc 3, sc 1. In last ch, [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1]. Working on the other side of the initial ch, sc 1, hdc 3, sc 2. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc of the round.
Round 2. Ch 1, sk the first st of the round, ([sl st 1, mini picot 1], sl st 1) 3 times. In next ch-1 space, [sl st 1, mini picot 1, sl st 1]. Sl st 1, ([sl st 1, mini picot 1], sl st 1) 3 times. Sl st into the next ch-1 space.
Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Large Holly Leaf Applique
With A, ch 11.
Round 1. Sc 1 in the second ch from your hook, sc 1, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1. In last ch, [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1]. Working on the other side of the initial ch, sc 1, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 2. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc of the round.
Round 2. Ch 1, sk first st (same st where you joined Round 1), (sc 1, picot 1, sc 1, sl st 1) 3 times. In next ch-1 space, [sc 1, picot 1, sc 1]. Sl st 1, (sc 1, picot 1, sc 1, sl st 1) 3 times. Sl st into next ch-1 space.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Crochet Holly Berry Appliques – Free Christmas Patterns
Small Holly Berry Applique
With B, ch 2.
Row 1. [Sc 3] in the first-made ch. (3 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Using a tapestry needle, draw the tail of yarn through the first sc with a movement from the right side to the wrong side of your work.
Pull the tail tightly to form a round drupe, and weave in your ends.
Medium Holly Berry Applique
With B, make a MC.
Round 1. Ch 1, sc 6 in MC. Join the round with a sl st into the first st or with an invisible join. (6 sts)
Fasten off.
Large Holly Berry Applique
(Work in the round)
With B, make a MC.
Round 1. Ch 1, sc 6 in MC. (6 sts)
Round 2. Sc 6. (6 sts)
Fasten off and close the drupe by weaving your yarn tail through the 6 sts of Round 2.
Weave in all your ends.
