Crochet Holland Baby Beanie

On April 27th, there is a holiday here in The Netherlands that is called Koningsdag, which simply means King’s Day. King’s Day is essentially what the name says, the day of the king, meaning that everybody in the Netherlands celebrates the king’s birthday. To make sure that everyone can properly party, this day was made a national holiday! King’s Day is actually a very fun day and it is perfect to know the Dutchies a bit better. The entire country just stops for one day and turns into a stream of people dancing in the streets, sailing along the canals, or sitting at cafes. The main ingredients of this day are fun, music, enjoying, and above all wearing some red, white, blue, and ORANGE! See picture below if you don’t believe me!

King's Day 2014 in Leiden.

This year, to celebrate the king in my own way, I thought of crocheting this Holland Beanie, the perfect accessory to keep kids warm while partying all day in the windy Netherlands!

The cool thing about this beanie is that it can be easily adapted to any Country or occasion. All you’ll have to do is to play around with your colors.

The Crochet Holland Baby Beanie is also an ideal project if you have never tried your hand at beanies before. The easy stitch pattern, mostly consisting of half double crochet, allows you to fully focus on understanding and learning the construction of a top-down crochet beanie.

For the Holland Baby Beanie, I used some very soft baby merino wool from Katia, but any other 4-ply merino can be used, such as the Baby Merino from DROPS. Just make sure to check your gauge in order to avoid ending up with very different sizes than stated in the pattern.

You can add this pattern to your Raverly queue here

Special Stitches

FP(h)dc / BP(h)dc
Front-post and back-post (half) double stitches are worked by inserting the hook in the vertical bar of the indicated stitch instead of the classical way, which is on top of the stitch.
In short, yo, insert your hook in the vertical bar of the indicated st from right to left on the front of the work for the FP(h)dc or on the back of the work for the BP(h)dc. Yo, pull up a loop. From here on, you can continue working your stitch as you would normally do. So, for FP/BPhdc, yo, pull through all loops on hook. For FP/BPdc, yo, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yo, pull through the last 2 loops.
