What is a half-and-half granny square?

A half-and-half granny square is a simple granny square crocheted in two colors so that, if you divide the square in two along its diagonal, one half of the granny square is in one color and the other half is in another color.

How to Crochet a Half-and-Half Granny Square

There are several ways to crochet half-and-half granny squares, including crocheting a half granny triangle in one color first, and then, attaching another half granny triangle directly to it.

However, in this tutorial, I will show you my method for crocheting half-and-half granny squares, which is by working in rounds using two colors.

Even though we’ll be working with two strands of yarn, you do not carry the non-working yarn inside your stitches, which can result in tension issues.

Instead, once you’re done using one color for the first half triangle, you drop the yarn and pick it up again from the same place on the next round so that at the end, you will have only four tails to weave in! Really, no extra ends.

And this is possible because, at the end of each round, you turn your square and crochet the next round in the opposite direction from where you came from!

But don’t worry if this sounds confusing right now, everything will be cleared once you start crocheting.

How to Change Color on the WS

  • Change color with the last “yo, pull through 2” of the last dc in the current color or working yarn (in this example, color B).
  • Hold your working yarn to the back (i.e. toward the RS) and the new color to the front (i.e. toward the WS, photo 10);
  • Yo with the new color (in this example, color A) and pull through both loops on your hook (photo 11). The new color is now your working yarn.
  • Pull the non-working yarn (i.e. the old color) to the right of your work if you are right-handed (photo 12) or to the left of your work if you are left-handed.
  • Then, continue to crochet your granny square using your new working yarn.
