In this tutorial, we’ll see how to crochet the granny stripe stitch.
The granny stitch or granny stripe stitch is a true crochet classic. It is easy to learn and works up really quickly.
This stitch is perfect for crocheting blankets, pillowcases, and other home decor projects, but also accessories, including scarves, Spring hats, bags, etc.
The basic element of the granny stitch is the same as for the classic granny square, which is a repeat of 3 double crochet stitches and a chain.
However, while for the granny square you crochet in rounds, for the granny stripe stitch, you’ll crochet in rows.
Different Ways to Crochet the Granny Stripe Stitch
There are a few different ways to crochet the granny stripe stitch, and the main difference between these methods is whether or not you space the 3 double-crochet blocks with a chain 1.
With or Without a Chain 1?
In the picture below, you can see two swatches crocheted with the granny stripe stitch without a chain-1 between the double crochet blocks (the green swatch on the left), and with a chain-1 spacing the double crochet blocks (the pink swatch on the right).
The main differences between chaining or not chaining 1 between double crochet groups are:
Ch-1 Sps | WITHOUT | WITH |
---|---|---|
Holes | Smaller gaps | Larger holes |
Fabric | More solid fabric | Lighter and drapey fabric |
Tension | – Stitches tend to be a bit tighter (you might consider going up in hook size) – Rows are shorter! – If you count the rows in the two swatches in the pic above, you’ll see that the one without ch-1 spaces has 9 rows and the one with ch-1 spaces has 8 rows) | – Same tension as for a classic granny square |
Best to Use for… | – Granny Stripe Blankets – Garments – Accessories for the cold season | – Market Bags – Lightweight Dresses |
In this tutorial, we’ll see both ways to crochet the granny stripe stitch.
This way, you can try both and choose the method that you like better!

1. Granny Stripe Stitch With ch-1 Sps – Free Crochet Tutorial
The granny stripe stitch with a chain 1 between the 3 double-crochet blocks is my go-to method when I need to crochet squares to mix with regular granny squares because the stitch counts and the tension match perfectly.
Ch a multiple of 4.
For this tutorial, I chained 20.
Row 1
Dc 1 in the fourth ch from hook (photo 1), *ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3] in next ch (photo 2), ch 1. Repeat from * until you have 4 chs remaining (photo 3). Sk 3, [dc 2] in the last ch (see last arrow on the left in photo 3, and photo 4).
Row 2
Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), turn. Sk 1, *[dc 3] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 3. Repeat from * until you get to the last ch-1 sp (see black arrows in photo 5). Finally, sk 1 and dc 1 in the last st (see pink arrow in photo 5, and photo 6).
Row 3
Ch 3, turn. Dc 1 in the very first st (indicated by the first arrow on the right in photo 7), *ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3] in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * until the last ch-1 sp (see black arrows in photo 7). Ch 1, sk 3, [dc 2] in the last st (see pink arrow in photo 7).
Repeat rows 2 and 3 to keep growing your work.
2. Granny Stripe Stitch Without Ch-1 sps

Ch a multiple of 3 + 1.
For this tutorial, I made a chain of 19.
Row 1. [Dc 2] in the fourth ch from your hook (the turning ch-3 counts as a dc), *sk 2, [dc 3] in the next ch. Repeat from * until you have 3 sts remaining. Sk 2, dc 1 in the last ch (photo 1).
Row 2. Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), turn. [Dc 2] in sp between the first two sts from the previous row (indicated by the arrow in photo 2). *Sk 3, [dc 3] in the sp between the last skipped st and the next. Repeat from * until you have 3 sts left (see arrows in photo 3).
Finally, dc 1 in the last st (see arrow in photo 4).
And your row 2 is complete (photo 5).
Repeat row 2 to grow your work.
