Gingerbread House Applique and Granny Square - Crochet Pattern

For my Christmas blanket, I made this cute gingerbread house applique to decorate one of the granny squares.

However, this pattern also makes the cutest Gingerbread House ornament, gift tag, or home decor idea. So, this year, I made a couple of these to hang around my house for the Holiday and they look super yummy!

Ice on the Roof

Notes

  • Crochet the ice on the sides of rows 14-27 of the gingerbread house applique.
  • Drop St: Identify the st that corresponds to the next but is two or three rows below. Insert your hook into that st two/three rows below, yo, draw up a loop, yo, pull through both loops on your hook.
  • On the first half of the roof, make your drop sts two rows below, and on the second half of the roof, make your drop sts three rows below.
  • On the left side of the roof (or right side if you are left-handed), pay extra attention not to miss any rows! The first sc after a drop st might be difficult to make because it goes in a row that is very well hidden by your drop st. So, move the drop st to the side with your fingers and make sure to make all your sc.

With your 3.5-mm hook, join B on the side of row 14 of the gingerbread house applique.

Row 1. *Sc 2 on the side of row 14, sc 2, drop st 1. Without skipping the row behind the drop st, (sc 2, drop st 1) 5 more times. [Sc 3] in the st on row 27 of the gingerbread house. (Drop st 1, sc 2) 6 times. [Sc 2] on the side of row 14. (43 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Candy Applique

(Make 5)

With C, make a MC.

Round 1. Sc 6 in MC. Join the round with a sl st into the first st. (6 sts)

Tighten the MC and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Door Applique

With C, ch 22.

Row 1. Sc in second ch from your hook, sc 6, (sc inc 1, sc 2) twice, sc inc 1, sc 7. (24 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Small Heart Applique

With B, make a MC.

Round 1. Ch 2, dc 2, hdc 2, ch 1, dc 1, ch 1, hdc 2, dc 2, ch 2, sl st into MC.

Tighten the MC and fasten off yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Attach the door, the candies and the heart appliques on the gingerbread house.

With a length of B, embroider the door.

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

If you are going to use the gingerbread house applique as a Christmas tree ornament, I suggest you make it sturdier by either:

  • Blocking
  • Adding a paper layer on the back of the gingerbread house.

To do so:

  • Place the gingerbread house on a piece of paper;
  • Draw around the shape of the house using a pencil;
  • Cut the paper following the lines;
  • Glue the piece of paper to the back of the gingerbread house applique using some liquid, all-purpose glue. For better adherence, I suggest you let it dry under something heavy, such as a pile of books;
  • For hanging the ornament, make a short hanging loop by drawing a short length of yarn through the ch-1 space on top of the roof. Make a knot at the top and cut the extra tails.
