Crochet Fingerless Gloves and Hand Warmers

Fingerless gloves are a great way to keep your hands warm during Fall and early Winter.

The advantage of fingerless mittens is that they leave your fingers free and fully functional to check your phone, drive a car, or crochet in the car during your lunch break! I also like wearing a sporty pair when I go jogging or hiking.

Fingerless gloves or wrist warmers also make great gifts, maybe paired with a matching scarf or beanie. This is something to keep in mind if you’re already thinking about your crocheted Christmas gift, or for your next craft fair!

How to Crochet Fingerless Gloves

If you’re new to crochet gloves, you might think that they are difficult or that you won’t be able to understand their construction.

But that’s definitely not true! In reality, making fingerless gloves or wrist warmers is really quick & easy also for beginners.

Best Yarn for Crocheting gloves

You can use any yarn weight for your crochet fingerless gloves. Even though most patterns are for Aran/worsted weight yarn, you’ll find patterns for any yarn weight, from fingering to sport weight yarn and bulky!

When choosing the yarn for your crochet gloves, make sure that the fiber content is either wool or wool blends, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers which will make your gloves soft and warm.

For each of the free patterns included in this post, I also indicated which yarn is used. However, feel free to substitute the indicated yarn with any yarn of the same weight.

How Much Yarn do you need for fingerless Gloves?

Most crochet patterns for gloves and wrist warmers only require a small amount of yarn, so that they can be a fun stash-busting project!

In this round-up post, I collected the best free crochet patterns for fingerless gloves for you to pick from.

But first, let’s make the point about sizing!

Crochet Fingerless Gloves Sizing Guide

To size crochet gloves, there are two measurements to keep in mind:

  • Width – the width is the circumference of your hand measured at the same level as your knuckles;
  • Length – the length of the hand from the base of the pal to the top of the fingers.

When you cannot measure your hand or you’re crocheting gloves for someone else, you can take standard hand sizing as a reference.

Female Gloves Sizing Chart

Most women have medium-sized hands, and that’s the size that most patterns are written for unless otherwise specified.

If you need to make gloves for teens, you’ll be good to go with a small woman size!

Male Gloves Sizing Chart

Even though I’ll only share glove patterns for women, I thought it might be helpful to have a reference for men’s hand sizes as well.

You can use these measurements to adapt unisex or women’s glove patterns for your hubby, boyfriend, or friend!
