Learn how to crochet a diamond granny square with this step-by-step photo and video tutorial.
The diamond square creates a very interesting optical illusion of a tilted square inside the granny square.
Even though there are many color changes, you’ll only have 4 tails to weave in because you’ll carry the non-working yarn inside your stitches on the wrong side of the square.
This pattern is great to mix and match with other granny squares for blankets, pillowcases, and any other project using granny squares.
You can crochet this square in any size by simply adding or removing a few rounds.
Here, you’ll find the free crochet pattern for the first 10 rounds of the diamond granny square, and the color chart diagram for the first 4 rounds.

Diamond Granny Square – Video Tutorial
The video also has a little trick for hiding the carried yarn better, which is borrowed from the granny diamond stitch.
Essentially, carry your yarn loosely, and in the next round, crochet over that loose loop of yarn!

How to Crochet a Diamond Granny Square
This square is worked with 2 yarn colors, A and B, always crocheting on the RS.
With A, make a MC.
Round 1 (RS)
Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-2 sp here and throughout). (Dc 3, ch 2) 3 times in MC, dc 2 closing the last dc with B (photo 1). Do not cut yarn A! [B] Sl st in third-made ch to join (photo 2). (3 dc sts per side, 1 ch-2 sp at each corner)
To reduce the number of tails to weave in, carry yarn A inside all the sts of round 2 on the WS of the square. See photo 5 for a picture of the WS of the square at the end of round 2.
Round 2 (RS)
[B] Sl st in first corner sp, ch 4, [dc 3] in same corner sp. *Ch 1, sk 3, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 3 times. Ch 1, sk 3, [dc 2] in initial corner sp closing the last st with A (photo 4). [A] Sl st in third-made ch to join. (6 dc sts and 1 ch-1 per side, 1 ch-2 sp at each corner)
From now on, always carry the non-working yarn inside your sts on the WS of the square.
