The Christmas JOY crochet applique is the latest addition to my Christmas appliques collection.

This is more like a 3 in 1 pattern because here, you’ll find the patterns to crochet each of the letters of the word JOY.

I guess there are many crochet alphabet patterns out there, but I really wanted to make some customized letters that I could use to make one more Christmas granny square and to create some personalized Christmas cards!

So, these letter appliques are pretty small and work up in no time!

MATERIALS

A small amount of Yarn of Choice
Appropriate Hook Size
Tapestry Needle

SIZE

With Sport (2, Fine) weight cotton yarn (I used Schachenmayr Catania) and a 2.5-mm (C/2 US, 12 UK) hook, these are the final measurements of each letter:

J – 1.4″ (3.5 cm) by 2″ (5 cm)
O – 1.2″ (3 cm) by 1.2″ (3 cm)
Y – 1.6″ (4 cm) by 2″ (5 cm)

GAUGE

This pattern is too small to accurately determine the gauge. Just keep in mind that the final size will depend on the yarn and hook you use.

CROCHET ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Inc – Increase
Sl St – Slip Stitch
St – Stitch
Yo – Yarn over

SPECIAL STITCHES

Increase (Inc)
One increase consists of 2 sts worked in the same indicated st. The pattern states whether you need to work a sc, hdc, or dc inc.

PATTERN NOTES

If the pattern says to “sc 2”, it means that you have to crochet 1 sc in each of the next two sts.
(…) – Repeat the instruction within round brackets for the indicated number of times.
[…] – Crochet the instruction within square brackets all in the same indicated st.

JOY APPLIQUE – FREE Crochet CHRISTMAS PATTERN

Letter J

Ch 20.

Row 1. Dc 1 in the third ch from your hook, dc inc 7, dc 9, [dc 1, ch 2, sl st 1] in the last ch. (25 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Letter O

Ch 12.

Form a ring by making a sl st into the first ch. Pay attention not to twist the ch.

Round 1. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc inc in each ch all around. Sl st into the first dc to join the round. (24 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Letter Y

Ch 16.

Row 1. Dc 1 in the third ch from your hook, dc 7. Ch 10, dc 1 in the third ch from your hook, dc in next 7 ch, dc 2 along the post of 8th-made dc, dc 1 in the same ch as 8th dc. Working in the remaining 6 ch of the initial ch-16, dc 5, [dc 1, ch 1, sl st 1] in the last ch.
